Vision ILC

Visian Implantable Collamer Lens for the Correction of Myopia

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness (when near objects are in focus but distant

objectsare blurred), has traditionally required correction with prescription glasses or contact lenses. In 1995, the FDA approved the first laser vision correction, which reshapes the cornea to prevent the need for glasses or contacts. However, some people are not great candidates for laser correction, due to various reasons such as a very high prescription, thin corneas, dry eyes, or keratoconus (abnormal corneal shape).

For these eyes, a different strategy is proving to be quite attractive. The implantable contact lens is a tiny lens that can be surgically positioned inside the eye to reduce the need for external lenses, such as contacts or prescription glasses. The Visian ICL, approved by the FDA for myopia in 2006, improves visual acuity and also has excellent visual quality and a proven track record of safety.  While the current models are for correction of myopia at present, clinical trials are currently underway for other visual corrections such as astigmatism and hyperopia (farsightedness).  To learn more about the Visian ICL, log onto

At Great Lakes Eye Care, Drs. Cooke and Seward are the refractive-team surgeons who perform the implantable contact lens procedure. If you are interested in discussing this refractive surgery option, a consultation can be scheduled by our refractive coordinator, Dean, at 269-428-3300 x 710.
